Dr. Maria P. Neira was appointed Director of the Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health at the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland in September 2005. Dr Neira has been awarded the Médaille de l’Ordre national du Mérite by the Government of France and is a member of the Academy of Medicine, Asturias, Spain.

9:00 AM Keynote Address: Air pollution and the connection to respiratory diseases

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 12.6 million people die from environmental health risks annually. Air pollution has become the fourth highest risk factor for premature deaths – one in 10 deaths worldwide is attributable to air pollution exposure. 9 out of 10 people breathe contaminated outdoor air that exceeds the acceptable levels set by the World Health Organization guidelines. This presentation will address:

WHO’s guidelines on air pollution- UAE’s current position
Regional strategy for air pollution
Monitoring air quality in the UAE to combat respiratory diseases
Projects to improve air quality and reduce pollutants
